Siegler, D. I. M. and Citron, K. M. (1974). Thorax, 29, 313-316. Serum and parotid salivary IgA in chronic bronchitis and asthma. It has been suggested that immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency may be an important predisposing factor to infection in chronic bronchitis and that this occurs more often in extrinsic asthmatics than in normal subjects. These claims have been investigated by measurement of IgA in stimulated parotid saliva and serum in chronic bronchitics and asthmatics. Salivary and serum IgA levels in 84 chronic bronchitics could not be correlated with sputum purulence, the degree of ventilatory impairment, radiographic evidence of emphysema or the smoking history. Serum IgA was low in 6% and salivary IgA was normal in all cases. IgA levels measured in both serum and saliva in 50 asthmatics showed no correlation with the number of positive skin tests or other evidence of atopy. Serum IgA was low in 8% and salivary IgA was normal in all cases.

Alterations in salivary IgA levels in infectious and inflammatory disorders of upper respiratory tract
Background: The airway surfaces are one of the most common ways of entry of infectious agents. Oral cavity associated lymphoid tissues are inductive site of humoral immune responses in inflammatory and infectious disorders of the upper respiratory tract. These lymphoid tissues play important roles in the induction of salivary IgA. The impact of upper respiratory tract diseases on salivary IgA p...
متن کاملAntibody response in the parotid fluid and serum of Irus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) after local immunization with Streptococcus mutans.
The antibody response of Macaca fascicularis in parotid saliva and serum to local immunization by two routes with Streptococcus mutans was studied and compared over 1 year. Antibodies were titrated and classified by indirect immunofluorescent staining using specific antiglobulin conjugates. Antiglucosyltransferase activity was assayed by an enzyme inhibition test. Animals were immunized first b...

STUDY OBJECTIVES To determine whether a correlation exists between markers for persistent Chlamydia pneumoniae infection, respiratory morbidity, and the metabolic syndrome. DESIGN Case-control study. A group of individuals with serologic markers (specific IgA > or = 1/128) suggestive of persistent C pneumoniae infection were compared with a group of control subjects without IgA antibodies (< ...
متن کاملSecretory immunity with special reference to the oral cavity
The two principal antibody classes present in saliva are secretory IgA (SIgA) and IgG; the former is produced as dimeric IgA by local plasma cells (PCs) in the stroma of salivary glands and is transported through secretory epithelia by the polymeric Ig receptor (pIgR), also named membrane secretory component (SC). Most IgG in saliva is derived from the blood circulation by passive leakage mainl...
متن کاملIron-binding proteins in sputum of chronic bronchitis patients with Haemophilus influenzae infections.
Airway inflammation during infection is associated with increased transudation of serum proteins and increased production of protein by the airway epithelium. We therefore, assessed whether Haemophilus influenzae infections in patients with chronic bronchitis are associated with increased levels of transferrin and lactoferrin in the sputum compared to uninfected patients. Sputum sol phase and s...
